NEWCASTLE DISEASE (RANIKHET DISEASE) is a contagious and fatal viral disease caused by Avian Paramyxo virus-1 often causing very high mortality in affected flocks. The disease is present worldwide.

ND is transmitted through:
  • Inhalation
  • Ingestion of contaminated feed and water
  • Movement of live birds, poultry products and other animals
  • Movement of people, vehicles and equipments
  • Delayed growth of young birds

The post-mortem Lesions in ND are:
  • Haemorrhagic lesions on the papillae of the proventriculus, caeca and small intestines
  • Congestion of trachea and lungs
  • Presence of egg yolk in the abdominal cavity

The diagnosis of ND is on the basis of:
  • Symptoms and lesions
  • Detection of antibodies, &
  • Virus isolation

ND symptoms vary from high morbidity and mortality to asymptomatic infections:
  • Incubation period: 2 to 6 days (av. 5 - 6 days)
  • Velogenic form:
    • Sudden appearance with heavy mortality
    • Increased respiration and weakness
    • Greenish diarrhoea
    • Reduced egg production with weak & shell less eggs
    • Muscular tremors and torticollis
    • Paralysis of legs and wings
    • Opisthotonus
    • Prostration and death
  • Mesogenic form:
    • Respiratory distress
    • Drop in egg production with weak and shell less eggs
    • Nervous symptoms may occur but are not common
    • Low mortality
  • Lentogenic form:
    • Respiratory distress in young chicken
    • Usually do not cause disease in adults
  • Asymptomatic form:
    • No clinical signs
    • Recognized by serological tests

Newcastle Disease can be prevented and controlled through strict biosecurity and effective vaccination.

Precautions:
  • Vaccine should be stored and transported as per the conditions recommended.
  • Vaccine vials should not be exposed to direct sun light.
  • Consult your veterinarian for specific vaccination schedule for your farm.
  • Vaccinate only healthy birds.
  • Reconstitute live vaccines only with the diluents supplied by Globion with aseptic precautions and use it within 2 hours.
  • For drinking water application of live vaccines, ensure that the water used is free of chemical disinfectants.
  • Do not mix with other vaccines.
  • Use the vaccine entirely once opened. Left over vaccine should be discarded.
  • If accidental injection occurs in human, consult your physician immediately.
